Most of the race officials I know all around the world take pride in organizing and running events/races. Many of them, through one way or another, have found being a part of the Race Committee as their avenue to stay involved and participating in the sport.

The sailors had to take Friday off to sail, and the race officials had to take Friday off to run the regatta. I see it as the same thing. We all work together to make the sport happen.
