Our Corsair is not a beach catamaran and it’s not in any way related to a “Hobie Cat”. It’s a trimaran and they are completely different boats from a catamaran. Trimarans do not fly a hull and are more similar than different to a monohull. The main difference is a trimaran trades a keel for floats for righting moment. Our PHRF rating is 33 and it has been a pretty fair rating when we have been allowed to mix it up with monohulls on the lake. We just bought a J-80 that will be joining the south shore fleet in a few weeks but for races like this, we really enjoy sailing the Corsair more because it can compete with the larger monohulls with 2 or 3 sailors on it.
We’ve sailed the Great Lake Race several times finishing 5th, 3rd, 1st, and then I think around 8th the last time. We really enjoy that race so I hope CSA won’t ban us. We’ll be doing the Round the Lake Race in a few weeks and it is open to all boats with a PHRF rating.
It seems from my limited knowledge of it that ORR if applied and administered correctly could probably do a better job of allowing mixed racing for certain events than a single rating system like PHRF.
