Re: Using the same scoring system

As you know, ORREz has multiple ratings per boat. Specifically, four wind conditions (Very Light, Light, Medium and Heavy) plus multiple courses (WL 50-50, Random Leg, plus another two or three). Thus, you end up with about 80 potential ratings per boat. We tried to get Regatta Network to modify their scoring package but it would involve manually entering all those ratings for each boat. Regattaman (Regatta Management Solutions) was developed by the ORRez guys to handle all those rating by allowing the RC to designate the condition and course for a race plus which boats were entered. Then the scoring package would “grab” that rating for each boat from the valid certificates on the ORRez website., and score the race.

As you know, Tom Beery is working with ORRez guys to develop a new rating system called ORA1 which is a Velocity Prediction Program (VPP) rating system. It is less complex than ORRez in that it has blended wind speeds and four courses, so a total of 8 ratings. Thus, if a club wanted to use Regatta Network, the ratings for each boat could be manually entered. Those ratings are being confected by ORRez guys at present and should be out very soon. All 484 GYA PHRF boats are being rated.by VPP. Tom has had several emails to PHRF certificate holders explaining the plan.

Tom Beery says other areas of the country (Long Island, Chicago, West Coast, etc.) have expressed an interest in moving their PHRF ratings to an ORA1 system. So we will see how that works out.
