Lake Pontchartain sailors in Sarasota

Five Lake Pontchartrain sailors competed in the Sarasota Bay Multihull Regatta this past Friday through Saturday. The event was hosted by the Sarasota Sailing Squadron. This event was also the Corsair trimaran national championship.

Twenty-four Corsair and Farrier trimarans were split into three fleets; a high PHRF, low PHRF, and the Sprint 750 one design class. Six races were sailed over the regatta in winds ranging from 5 knots to over 20 knots on the last day of racing. SYC's Tim and Henry Molony won high PHRF sailing their Corsair Pulse 600 Valerio despite Tim breaking a finger while racing on the last day and pushing through. The overall Corsair national championship was determined by corrected time finishes in each race and was won by long time Corsair competitors Kathryn and Paul Garlick sailing their Corsair 28R.

In addition to the Corsairs, there was a 14 boat Weta trimaran fleet that raced the regatta and 11 races were completed. Pontchartrain Yacht Club's Bob Hodges and Elise Read and Snoann Jones (racing double-handed) were entrants. Bob squeaked out the class win in a tie breaker with Michigan sailor Sean Fidler followed only two points down in third by Bill Hanson a dinghy sailor new to the Weta class from Lake Carlyle near St. Louis.

Great event despite some minor Covid restrictions and always a real treat to sail on the beautiful waters of Sarasota Bay. Put doing a regatta at Sarasota Sailing Squadron on your to do list for sure.
