In Response To: Membership Drive ()

Jason,

I was a previous membership chairman and have been told that I hold the record for new memberships in a year at 59 new members in one year. I almost had sixty members, one I was recruiting joined shortly after my term. She is now literally my favorite leader and sailor on the lake.

If anyone can give me a list of members who left NOYC in 2020, I would be glad to call each member and develop an exit report, so we fully understand the reasons for exit. I almost quit NOYC over the lack of a BOTY series last year. After sitting next to a new board member recently, who was committed to improve, she talked me into joining another year.

I recommend interviewing the older members of our club. Ask our commodore about the Le Mans races of the past. They were out of the box fun. Listen to the stories of the past

Our sailing program Zephyr takes people out over 50 times per year, some racing some cruising - the balance of both is very important. The annual cost is about $5K per year for a Wednesday night program with an average crew size of 7 and an average time on the water of 2.5 hours including boat prep and put up time. This is 875 annual hours of people time on the water. Dividing $5,000 by 875 is about a $5.71 cost per sailor for an amazing 2.5 hour experience and adventure. My message here is sailing is less expensive than golf. We need to promote these facts as there is a perception sailing is ":stuffy" and "expensive". I have meet the most wonderful "down to earth" people all over the East and West coast plus New Zealand. This sport we call sailing is a "hidden secret" we need to get the word out. Partner with SYC , CSA and LPWSA share ideas between each other. Brothers and sisters need to get along. We are a sailing family on the lake.

For those looking for a good book, read ":Saving Sailing" by Nicholas Hayes. I have attached a short video of his presentation at a US Sailing Seminar in Nashville for those who have time top listen to listen.

See Everyone on the Water!
